Methylene blue, also known as methylthionine chloride, is used as a medicine to treat methaemoglobinaemia and as a dye for chromoendoscopy.
Methylene blue selectively stains a specialized epithelial column, where it allows the diagnosis of the esophagus even in patients with very small lesions.
The most commonly used chromoendoscopy agents include 0.1% methylene blue or 0.03-0.5% indigo carmine.
